The swallow is a bird that lives mainly on the wing. Catching all its food in the air. These birds are summer visitors to the UK. Arriving June time and leaving in October. You often see swallows flying and diving for insects over the Wheat and Barley fields. These birds seldom come to ground choosing to roost on power lines and telephone wires
Description
The swallow has evolved curved wings and a streamlined body over time and also a sleek long tail for manoeuvrability. They have a dark blue back , orange throat and white underside and are instantly recognised from their flight and body shape.
The Swallow builds a nest by sticking small plates of mud together in an inverted cup shape. These nest are often attached to eaves of houses or barns. These birds will also nest on cliffs and caves. They lay around 5 eggs which are white in colour.
These birds will also feed their chick on the wing once the babies have fledged the nest
