It was a bonsai market that I happened upon. It was fascinating as I knew little about them. I never knew anyone who had one when I was younger. The man at the market answered all of our questions. According to one purist, "the term should be reserved for plants that are grown in shallow containers following the precise tenets of bonsai pruning and training, resulting in an artful miniature replica of a full-grown tree in nature." In the most restrictive sense, "bonsai" refers to miniaturized, container-grown trees adhering to Japanese tradition and principles.

Bonsai Tree Care

Positioning: Your bonsai should not be in direct heat or draft.
Lighting: Your bonsai will be happiest with abundant sunlight.
Humidity: Bonsais need humidity to keep their soil moist.

A bonsai is started with a cutting, seedling - even a small tree of a species suitable for growing a proper bonsai. To start, you can use any perennial woody-stemmed tree or shrub that produces true branches and can be cultivated to remain small through pot confinement with crown and root pruning. Some species are popular as bonsai material because they have characteristics, such as small leaves or needles.

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

Question: A doctor and a bus driver are both in love with the same woman, an attractive girl named Sarah. The bus driver had to go on a long bus trip that would last a week. Before he left, he gave Sarah seven apples. Why?

Answer! Can you guess??? An apple a day keeps the doctor away!

I went to a site that was just crazy over them. Every one of them reminded me of the stronger, larger version. I really think it would be fascinating to have one, taking the time and learning this art that is centuries old, shaped, and passed down by the different experts and enthusiasts throughout the generations. When your bonsai approaches its final, planned size, you plant it in a display pot, one designed for bonsai display that is shaped to limit any further growth, except to reshape its already diminutive size.

I have never been able to think of a bonsai without thinking about Japan. Bonsai actually refers to the gardening technique. Interestingly, the trees have always fascinated me and I think it must be rewarding to train your tree to do what I want to do to it. The price for a proper bonsai can be anywhere from a few hundred dollars up to one million. I hope it sings and dances too, especially for that price.

The practice of bonsai is sometimes confused with dwarfing, but dwarfing generally refers to research, discovery, or creation of plants that are permanent, genetic miniatures of existing species. Plant dwarfing often uses selective breeding or genetic engineering to create dwarf cultivars. Bonsai does not require genetically dwarfed trees but rather depends on growing small trees from regular stock and seeds. Bonsai uses cultivation techniques like pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting to produce small trees that mimic the shape and style of mature, full-size trees.

Interesting because I used to think that bonsai was just a specialized miniature tree or a dwarf. I am truly fascinated by the people that take the time to tend to them. It is a most dedicated practice. I would love to produce some of the specimens that they do.
