Much agreed. My mother was never a drinker or addict. She went to a specialist for a bone spur beneath her toe-nail, and the doctor removed the spur but placed the toe nail back on. Everyone we spoke to said it would have grown back, but it became infected and turned into months off her feet with oxycodone for pain. After over a year and a half of being prescribed oxy monthly, the doctor told my mother he had to cut her off because he could risk losing his license. In the middle of a divorce, with my father no longer there to get them I was tasked with finding the pills. I ended up also addicted for several years.
The doctor was absolutely responsible, but it should be noted that the manufacturers have been shown to be giving bonuses to the doctors for meeting prescription quotas. They are legally-sanctioned cartels and dealers in my eyes. It was my fault for getting addicted, but my mother was the victim of a toxic medical industry as well as malpractice.
