So panel 1 on this page may be my favorite individual panel in this whole issue. Taken as a page, I love the Hazel stuff from last week, but the pulp detective in me can't look at those amazing shadows Theresa has done, and not be smitten.
I talked to Theresa when I first saw this panel to let her know how much I loved it, and she told me she was really feeling strong noir vibes from this issue - music to my ears! We joked a bit how it was never our intention setting out, but we appear to be making the seminal 1920's Horror-Noir-Sci-Fi-Gay Romance novel of our times!
Speaking of genre fusion, it's actually kind of interesting that there aren't many examples (that I know of) of noir horror out there. It's especially weird given that American noir finds it's origins in German Expressionist films like The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari:
Films that basically invented the horror genre in film as we know it today! So what happened? Why is there a separation between noir and horror when the two genres swim in such similar aesthetic streams? Maybe that's what drew me to Lovecraft and Call of Cthulhu in the first place. Call of Cthulhu is the ultimate fusion of horror and mystery!
