One of the things I really enjoyed about it was seeing the other person (or people) typing in real time. Instead of messages appearing one paragraph or sentence at a time, you saw each character as it was entered into the keyboard, including backspaces and so on. File transfers and so on worked really well. Things seemed to go downhill for chat programs once MSN hits its peak around 2005.
