I haven't heard of it, but that's a fairly common symbol in geometry and math.
It appears they bound their book in the dried skin of a dead mammal, or at least a cover that looks that way, but don't read too much into that, I think it was pretty common in that time period. :P
In general, physical books are very good to have. For one thing, they are harder to censor or re-write.
