A question that provokes thoughts, that's for sure...
”Would you ever give your life so that someone else may live?”
The bitter truth is, no matter how generous and selfless creatures we paint ourselves to be, we humans, are born selfish. We give heartwarming speeches and talk at length about the sufferings and how our hearts ache for others, but when it’s time to put ourselves on the line, we always choose something else.
Death; it is feared by many and ignored by all. The thought of it haunts us, so we try to shove it deep inside our minds, hoping it would not come out. Everyone is so focused on living! Who would ever willingly want to die?
So when a question like this arises, we find ourselves splitting into two parts.
One part wants to answer it as it should be answered; YES. It wants to boast and write sonnets about why they would offer away their lives for their special person or friend, how they would not even blink before ending it just so the other one lived.
But the other part, the dark small little thing inside that hides in the corner most of the time, says something entirely different. Why should they give up their lives for someone else? They want to live!. It knows well enough that in the end, even the part who is saying yes will not follow through. So why put up an act? Why put on colours when things are all black and white??
The strange thing isn none of these parts of ours is wrong. You do want to give up your life for the ones you adore, but you also hope and pray that the day never comes.
You know you should.
You know you would.
But you hope you don’t have to.
My answer is the same as I explained above.
I’d definitely be willing to give up myself so that someone dear to me gets to live. But I also hope that it never comes to that point where I need to make this choice. I am, after all, selfish to the core. I would rather stay beside them and enjoy our last days together than wither away from existence, and miss out on the moments we both could create.
