Soon the old vote system will be no more and the new Dark Energy Crystal system will be here.
How will the new system will hold up if the price of Steem tanks?
I don't know but at least they have started migrating to include other chains. It will be very interesting to see where this all goes.
One possible scenario is Steem Monsters becomes the largest and most powerful force on the Steem block chain.
Another one is SM cuts their continued loses from their exposure to the (always declining) price of Steem and bases the value of Dark Energy Crystals off of something else entirely.
Only time will tell.
