In early 1980s Lemon Popsicle, series of Israeli sex comedies, was popular enough to get its own spin-off. It was Private Manoeuvres, 1983 film directed by Tzvi Shissel. This film, written by series creator Boaz Davidson, represents something of a sequel to fourth installment, in which three young protagonists had to deal with mandatory service in Israel Defence Force. Yudale (Huey in English version, played by Zachi Noy) is the only part of trio to appear in this film, apparently stuck in the military with his old superiors that include pompous Sergeant Shemesh (Ramit in English version, played by Yoseph Shiloah). His unit is made of misfits hopelessly lacking military skills and with very little enthusiasm to get them. Most soldiers, like Yudale, prefer gambling, partying with female soldiers or trying every way to evade duty or serious physical effort. Monotony in the base is interrupted with arrival of Swiss ambassador and his voluptuous wife (played by Sybille Rauch) who happens to be nymphomaniac. At the same time, the unit is about to take part in regular manoeuvres during which it competes with rival unit made of crack paratroopers, so Captain (played by Moshe Ish-Kassit) demands from his men extra effort to prevent another humiliation.

Private Manoeuvres represented departure from series formula. There isn’t any romance and although there is some sex and nudity (provided by German playboy model and future porn star Sybille Rauch, who also appeared in few more films of the series), this film is more generic than sex comedy. Quality of humour is much lower and many jokes, like those dealing with rectal exams or characters being in drag, are repetitive. Same can be said of music soundtrack which, unlike formidable collection of greatest pop hits of 1950s and early 1960s, here sounds much poorer, being made of much fewer songs that repeat at awkward moments, sometimes accompanied by US military marches. Noy, Shiloah and the rest of the cast try hard, but they can do little with uninspired script. Although much shorter than previous installments, Private Manouvres is rather challenging for viewers with lack of patience and that is unjustifable for this type of comedy.
