Thirty years after the first Star Trek feature film, popular franchise received a spectacular reboot in the form of a film directed and produced by J. J. Abrams, one of the most successful and influential contemporary Hollywood filmmakers. The script conveniently uses time travel in order to create parallel universe, thus allowing the straying from canon and more creative freedom for scriptwriters. Plot introduces main character James T. Kirk (played by Chris Pine) and chronicles his days and Starfleet Academy and adventures that would culminate with his taking the helm of USS Enterprise. The cast, although far from iconic standards of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, handles the difficult task well, providing good chemistry, while Abrams' direction provide plenty of spectacular action. First completely new incarnation of Star Trek is a success that could be enjoyed even by audience that doesn't belong to trekkie fandom.
