Sicario, 2015 film directed by Denis Villeneuve, begins with war between Mexican drug cartels spilling over northern border in most gruesome ways imaginable, with mass murder with few FBI agents as collateral damage. Protagonist, played by Emily Blunt, is a female FBI agent who survived the incident and who joins government task force led by mysterious CIA operative (played by James Brolin) and goes over the border to supervise extradition of a cartel leader from Mexican jail; while the operation goes on, she begins to question whether it has anything to do with actual criminal investigation. Written by Taylor Sheridan, Sicario received rave reviews because its bleak atmosphere and ending suggested critical view of US War on Drugs; other praised Villeneuve skillful direction, especially during tense extradition scenes. Unfortunately, Sicario suffers because of poorly written script which, more or less, falls apart in second part, resulting in series of annoying cliches and disappointing plot resolution.
