Christopher Nolan's Interstellar was one of the most eagerly anticipated and one of the most ambitious 2010s films. Obviously inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey, it was conceived as the epic story of future space exploration, albeit set in a somewhat more distant and much bleaker future than in Stanley Kubrick's film. Protagonist, played by Matthew McConaughey, is a former astronaut forced to feed his family as simple farmer on decaying and increasingly starving Earth. Plot shows how he is recruited by group of former NASA scientists for a desperate mission with an aim of discovering habitable worlds for humanity through interstellar travel. Interstellar is one of rare "hard" science fiction films, with a script that tries to explore pure scientific concept, without cheap excuses for appearance of bug-eyed monsters. Nolan works hard, and for the most part, achieves that aim, but general impression is compromised with too much family melodrama and some unfortunate and rather unsubtle parallels of future Earth with 1930s Dustbowl-era Midwest.
