Space exploration in real life is much more difficult and dangerous than in Hollywood films, and one of the rare examples of Hollywood film that presents that activity in realistic way is 2013 space disaster drama Gravity. Protagonist, played by Sandra Bullock, is Dr. Stone, US astronaut who becomes the only surviving crew member of a space shuttle after collision with space junk in Earth's orbit. Film shows her attempts to find shelter and way back to Earth while facing difficulties created by weightlessness, cold and inevitably diminishing supplies or air. Directed by Alfonso Cuaron and co-written with his son Jonas, Gravity is triumph of simplicity despite impressive budget. Entire film takes place in real time and Dr. Stone's struggle for survival looks both magnificent and disturbingly realistic. Despite some unecessary melodrama, Gravity deserves reputation as one of technically and stylistically most impressive 2010s films.
