This is my first witness post for 2021. I guess it's also the first post as a Hive witness on a brand new year (last year I was still a Steem witness, before the fork).
I want to take this opportunity to share some thoughts about my motivation for being a witness and also about my intentions about this activity for the year that just started.
I decided to support this project from its very early days and I stayed with it despite the rocky weather that we experienced quite a few times. Especially when the project was under the Steem governance.
I didn't have many expectations when the Hive switch happened, but I was very happy that we can at least have a clean slate. In all honesty, these expectations have been widely exceeded by how the community reacted. The Hive ecosystem is thriving at the moment, and I'm happy to be part of it.
We're also at the beginning of a new crypto bull run cycle. Traditionally, there's a lot of enthusiasm accompanying these cycles, but there's also a lot of unrealistic expectation, lack of education (because people uneducated about crypto are joining various projects in hope of some quick profits) and, obviously, a lot potential for being deceived. I was around in 2016-2017 and I think I am better equipped to face this new wave now. I will do my best to keep a balanced perspective and share as much as I can from my experiences. Together we can form a better map of this - still mainly uncharted - territory.
As a witness, I contributed a tool for checking the rewards and also a PHP package to interact with the chain. Both are still work in progress, and both have been self-supported. I did have a funding proposal running for more than a year, but unfortunately I didn't receive the necessary support (although I was asking only for 20 HBD / day). I still don't know if I will submit another proposal, which means my tech contributions will still be self supported (which means they may lag behind quite a lot).
On the other side, I will try to ramp up my writing here and implement a few writing challenges, these used to help with user engagement in the early days.
To summarize: my witness node is still up and running (and I have no intention whatsoever to shut it down), I will do my best to keep contributing at the technical level, and I know for sure I will contribute more at the writing level.
Let's hope 2021 will be better than 2020, but worse than 2022.
