You may wonder what a movie called Don't Look Up, just released on Netflix (like, literally, less than a week old) has to do with financial talks, or crypto, or a community called LeoFinance. It has everything you can imagine and even more.
But let's start slowly.
First of all, you would see Leonardo Di Caprio and Meryl Streep in roles quite unusual for both of them. Di Caprio plays an astronomer and Meryl Streep plays the US President. There are also episodic appearances of other major actors, and even a performance by Ariana Grande. So, if it would be only for the actors, and you would have quite a few reasons to watch it.
But it goes way beyond that. The plot is simple, and it's clear even from the beginning: the Earth is going to be hit by a comet in about 6 months. It's a big comet, about 9 kilometer wide, and at these dimensions, the impact will generate a planetary extinction event. Humanity will literally disappear. In 6 months.
Now, from this point on, everything in the movie is eerily realistic. The astronomers go on a TV show to warn humanity, but, alas, they're not "media trained". Meaning they just tell the truth. And because of that, they are laughed at and turned into memes, at worst, or, suddenly in the center of attention, they start affairs with one of the TV show hosts, at best.
The US President hears them, but it doesn't quite serve her midterms strategy, so she puts them on hold. She does nothing, until some turn of events in the politics fabric makes the comet event useful for the elections.
The social media reaction to each and every move of the protagonists is also a copy paste of what's actually happening in the real world: a meme is more worthy than the truth.
It's surreal, and yet so plausible.
I won't tell you how it's ending, but I will insist on something that is very visible during the movie: the incredible demise of the real scientific approach, replaced by political maneuvers.
It's almost like the world would be hit by a pandemic, and instead of listening to real scientists which are proposing viable approaches, politicians will choose only the rich guys "solution", the one that generates money without doing anything to stop the threat, force it on the entire planet and then run away. Oh, wait...
And what's the link with crypto, you asked? There is a very short mention of Bitcoin at some point (which is allegedly to be replaced by a coin called RatCoin) but that's not what I'm hinting at.
The link is not at all visible, it's just my hunch that the spirit in this community may be a real counter force to this chronic amateurism. That the people who are self-sovereign are less prone to be part of this weird social media led reality, in which a meme has more power than truth.
I might be wrong, and it may so happen that the cypherpunk spirit that created this very platform will be eventually replaced by memecoins, but I still think we may have a chance.
