Clarity is really important in all writing. It's making sure the reader can understand your message clearly. Here are a few rules for writing.
Sentence structure is very important for clarity in your sentence . Avoid confusing sentences, use basic ideas and use subject-verb-object. Constructing sentences in simple form increases clarity. Start with a subject, then follow with the verb and end with the object which receives the action of the verb.
An example: - Bob hit the ball.
- The ball was hit by Bob.
- Hit Bob the ball, The ball Bot hit, The hit Bob ball.
The simplest one is the easiest one to understand
Specify reality
To out it simply - say what you mean, and mean what you say. Also use clear nouns and verbs. This will help make your writing good.
Using this list of words will help with this:
To be
To do
To go
To have
To get
Example:I think maybe we should go to the movies.
Better: We should go to the movies.
Better: Let's go to the movies.
Omit needless words
We can get rid of two main things in our sentences to improve them.
Eliminate "that" and Eliminate "there"
Funny enough I did this in the first sentence under the sub heading. It was originally: There are two main things that we can get rid of in our sentences that can help us improve them.
Use parallel structure
"State coordinate ideas in similar form"– William Strunk Jr.
Example: I went with my dad for a ice-cream, then I had to go inside to cook, and finally I got to sleep on my bed.
A better sentence: I walked with my dad, cooked, and finally slept.
The first sentence is long and wordy. By using parallel structure we can make it shorter and not get lost with what the person is actually doing while we read.
