A good day to all reading this! Today's reading is Psalm 4:6 and Proverbs 2:16-19:
Psalm 4:6
There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.
I looked at various commentaries on this passage, and they tend to agree that here David is contrasting the natural man's desire to have the things of this world with the believer's joy in knowing the Lord. The natural man, no matter what he pleasures and comforts he has, still can't be satisfied or truly at peace; he still doesn't know good, but those who know the Lord have His presence. This passage echoes the priestly blessing found in Numbers 6:24, "The Lord bless thee, and keep thee; the Lord make his face to shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee; the Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace."
Proverbs 2:16-19
These passages follow from line 11, "Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee."
To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.
For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.
None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.
Here Solomon tells his son that if he holds to wisdom and discretion (acting rightly), then he will not go astray with the adulterous woman who will seem especially enticing because she is new and unknown to him, and will attempt to flatter him with her words. Solomon reminds him that despite her appearances, committing adultery with her brings death. Speaking more broadly, all sin tries to entice us in this way, but holding to the Lord's truth is a shield against them.
