It may seem a little abstract or even worse and it may come to you as weird and you may be asking yourself what is she on about? Well I monetized a hobby I had for a few month into a business I’ve had for the past 4 years or so.
It was all cute going well honestly it took off faster than I could have imagined but along the line I started feeling out of it, like I didn’t love it anymore and it was just to get paid. Sometimes I’d abandon project and just leave them to rot because at the time it honestly meant nothing to me.
It was sad, weird, a feeling I wasn’t used to, my projects meant nothing to me? The thought of creating them used to being me so much joy so how exactly did I get here? For months on end I dumped the skill went on a retreat of some sort.
It felt like a huge task anytime I had to pick up my tools and get to work, I’d think to myself when would it end so I can get to something else? do I really have to be here? Can’t I just outsource this to another designer? And anytimes those thoughts came to me I’d wonder what really changed, more like where did I go wrong in the grand scheme of things.
The answer is I did not, I just did too much at a time and erased every atom of creative freedom I had so every piece I created atarted feeling like a robots piece all garbage in garbage out with no creativity whatsoever.
Few months down the line I prayed about it, what could I possible do to start feeling the butterflies and love I had for my designs and I was convicted to strip off designs I wasn’t proud of and create a safe space for people that wanted to be decent and feel comfortable in designs that expressed their personality and aesthetic.
This was my last “beach wear” design as they call it in Nigeria. I pivoted to creating actual fits that made my men and girlies comfortable and confident whenever they showed up to events
And since then I’ve been happy to create and explore, sharing comfort, personality and weaving love into every stitch has made my love for creating art return little by little.
It may sound weird or odd but it worked for me, did it cause hitches here and there? Obviously which new system doesn’t cause that? But I’m happy now, I get to create art that I’m proud of and also reflects my vaults as a person and as a brand.
