Irse, volver. ¿Por cuál palabra trepo?
¿Esta breve existencia quién la explica?

Mal cojeamos, con rumbo distraído.
Pediré. Ahora pido y he pedido

Me complace

XIX

Who has said that hatred places us
on the animal scale? Why do I dissent
and get condemned to stake and stocks?
Why does the executioner pierce my feeling

with a sting? Whom does it splash—
the blood of other blood I do not blame?
To go, to return. By which word do I climb?
Who explains this brief existence?

We limp poorly, with distracted course.
I will ask. I now ask and have asked
for a country shaped to fit dispute

with dialectic faithful to what is born.
I am a sincere man. I delight
in the light on the skin of a fruit.
