Set in the picturesque valley of the River Frome, this impressive castle offered hidden treasures and a sinister past. The castle had many unique features, which now must be left to your imagination. However, the 14th century chapel which houses the tombs of past generations of the Hungerford family remained. It also contained rare wall paintings and a collection of lead death masks. The troubled and sometimes gruesome history of Farleigh Hungerford Castle, the crimes and intrigues of its Hungerford lords were fascinating. After exploring the castle ruins, we visited the Priest’s House and the beautiful chapel of St Leonard’s. We descend into the crypt and saw the sinister ‘portrait’ coffins. The Priest’s House is full of interesting finds from past excavations. So enough with the tourisism write up, please enjoy the photos we took.

Inside the Lady Tower - Imagine being trapped within the upper confines
The Lady Tower was complete until youth burned the vines on the side of the tower and destroyed much of it.
Side note - When finished went to the shop and had some delicious ginger mead. I must admit this started me on a ginger mead kick, which I have found local at home in Northern Michigan. Still on an all things ginger kick since this trip several years ago.
Also purchased the book The Lady in the Tower by Marie-Louise Jensen which gave life to the relics of the grounds we explored and added to the valuable lessons of history.
Lead Coffins in the Crypt - can't see it but there is a sign in the corner warning about rats
