It turns out to be a terrible day today in news. The red wolf population has reduced to only 40. For comparison there was exactly 120 in 2006. A mammal that at one point was a large and common sighting is now almost extinct.
The red wolf was originally added to the endangered list way back in 1967. As well as being completely extinct in the wild in 1980.
Humans attempted to reintroduce wolves back into the wild a little after but that is the population now down to only 40.
This is extremely and dangerously low. As the red wolf is not as high on most peoples priority list for endangered animals.
Not sure if it has to do with culture or the actual physical appearance, people just don't seem to care as much compared to most other extremely low population animals.
For comparison there is roughly 1,600 giant pandas, 4,500 snow leopards, and 2,000 Bengal tigers. This number are also dangerously low, but I hadn't even heard about red wolves until recently.
Hunters and vehicle accidents are the main reasons for these beautiful creatures to be going extinct.
There isn't much we can do besides donate and get other people informed. I hope my little word can give other people the knowledge to tell others and we can stop atleast the hunting of these amazing mammals.
