On December 14, 2017, the FCC headed by Ajit Pai will most likely vote to end net neutrality and bring about the age of the Sith Lord. For those that have not been following the news. Here is what you need to know:
What is Net Neutrality?
In essence, net neutrality protects free speech online. ISPs such as Comcast, Verizon, etc. are pretty much obligated to provide everyone with fair and open internet networks. This means that they provide access to any website at the same bandwidth and speed.
Without Net Neutrality, they can pretty much f*ck you up. They can slow down websites of competitors, restrict access to news that go against their narrative, charge premium on famous sites such as youtube, etc. Pretty much anything that an online dictator would do.
Net Neutrality is also important to maintain free trade, especially for small-scale businesses. Without, larger companies can pay the ISPs to restrict access to the websites of these small businesses and virtually eliminating their competition. No company should be allowed to interfere with this open marketplace. ISPs are the internet’s gatekeepers, and without Net Neutrality, they would seize every possible opportunity to profit from that gatekeeper position.
Why in the world are you telling me this?
On December 14, 2017 the FCC headed by Ajit Pai, aka Sith Lord, will most likely vote to end net neutrality. So yeah, you pretty much only have 2 more days of democracy. Things are so bad that an FCC employee pleaded with the public to stop them from killing net neutrality.
Since there is almost no time left, the only thing we can do right now is to get Congress on our side. Yeah I know we hate them with our guts. But right now they're our only hope. The best way to go about this is to go to the website https://www.battleforthenet.com/breaktheinternet/ and join the fight.
