Today I am going to give you one of the most powerful tools I have ever found to help you with skill number
1: Building True Confidence. I assign this as homework to every single client I ever work with, and if they don’t do it, we don’t move forward. Because it is that powerful!
Before we get into it though, let me tell you a little bit about myself:
I have a true passion for helping people connect, and show off how cool they really are. I grew up with a bad speech impediment, social anxieties, and suffering anxiety attacks (which I still have). As a result, I grew up painfully uncomfortable in social settings. I had a hard time communicating with my peers in any setting. As a highly analytical, right brained thinker, I always had a disconnect between ‘fact’ and ’emotion.’
Not understanding my own emotions, I wasn’t about to relate to others emotions and found social interactions difficult and exhausting.
I knew I had a choice: I could either use these issues as a crutch to justify my shyness, or I could kill the crutch and turn my disadvantage into my greatest asset. Not one to quit, I now act as a guide, helping others kill their crutches as well.
It’s this difficulty that lead me down a path of personal development and personal discovery that would take years of my life, hundreds of hours, and thousands of dollars, but I was determined that I was going to get “good at social interactions.” I emerged on the other side as a social butterfly who seems to attract people naturally.
Now, as promised, the most powerful tip I’ve ever found to building true confidence:
I assign this as homework immediately to all of my clients. It’s a simple task and should take no more than 20 minutes.
Take a piece of paper, draw a line right down the middle, and on the left hand side write down 10 things you are grateful for. Now, on the right hand side, write down 10 things you are proud of.
Why?
The 10 things you are grateful for will help you put your life in perspective, and show you how lucky you are. The 10 things you are proud of will help you see how much you are capable of. Seeing how much you’ve done in life makes it easy to see how much you can really do!
Overall, what you just created, is a list of twenty things that make you feel good. The better you feel, the more confident you will be.
On that, when the day draws out, and you find yourself unmotivated or in a place of self doubt, that’s when you pull that list out and read EVERY SINGLE ENTRY. It changes your outlook on life, in a very real and very positive way! I recommend keeping this list on you all day long as a reference point, and then creating a new list each morning.
