There is a fundamental principle of the internet that a lot of people have seemingly forgotten, if the service is free, you are the product. Unless you were taking a lot of measures to protect yourself when on twitter, such as using a VPN, and being very careful with what you were posting, you're identity was probably something twitter could have already pieced together based on the data they collected to sell to advertisers. Verifying via paying is honestly not really putting you in a very different position on twitter than you were already in.

And Musk being the owner is making it no more or less dystopian then it already was, and I don't see how it could be made worse at all. Manipulation of algorithms, shadowbans, bans for people obviously not breaking any of the rules, there isn't really anything he could do to make this worse.

That said, there are ways you could see it be made better. I've seen some translation of Japanese twitter saying that in the days since much of the staff was fired, the trending tab has become far less political in nature, something that a lot of people have long suspected was being manipulated to push the politics of the people running twitter, so it suddenly becoming non-political and seeming more organic is a good sign, assuming it's not just coincidence.

I am skeptical as of right now, but as I said there really isn't a way for the platform to get any worse than it already was. So either twitter goes the way it was already heading, or it becomes at least a little better.
