Characters being exceedingly stupid is a trope that needs to die, especially if it's the main character. Even in Slice of Life where it feels most at home, very rarely is it done in a way that isn't annoying as hell.

Ouran High School was one of the few with The Prince (I can't for the life of me remember his name off the top of my head). And even then, while I adore the show, he kind of ranks low on characters I like.
