I fully realize it means making it in life, and that's the problem. The idea that it doesn't matter if they make it or not so long as they have each other is kind of a depressing sentiment considering that in the verses their lives keep getting worse as the verses go on.

And who just sit's there thinking how well there life turns out doesn't matter because you have someone to love? The only people I know who think that are people who have just kind of resigned themselves to their lot in life.

And the line is 'We got each other, and that's a lot for love' not 'Hey, at least we have each other'. The point may have been that despite everything else going on they still have each other, but what was said is that they have got a lot for love, which is just not true, or at the very least it's not something you can determine from any of the other lyrics.

And that main line, 'We're Halfway there, livin' on a Prayer' is one line, not two separate thoughts. The line 'We're Halfway there' when sung in that uplifting and energized way he sings it implies they are going to be getting somewhere, and they have made it this far 'Livin' on a Prayer'. If the point of that line is they are currently at such a rock bottom spot, that was entirely the wrong way to deliver that line. If the second verse at least showed them pushing on and doing better, not actively worse, it wouldn't be so bad.

He sings the song in such a way that implies there is something they are fighting towards, the music is soaring and especially uplifting at that chorus. But lyrically this is not an uplifting song at all. There lives were taking a hard turn for the worst at the very beginning of the song, then we get a chorus about how they will be alright because they love each other. This is immediately followed up by them being in an even worse position then before, and then the song just kind of ends. How does this match at all with the music behind it?

That really is where the problem with this song is, the music and performance are trying to be this uplifting anthem of being able to survive and make it through the hard times, but the lyrics do not paint a picture of people surviving and making it through hard times.

And the Hero bit was suppose to be a bit sarcastic, since he was trying to comfort his crying wife with that terrible bridge. I wasn't saying the song treated him like a hero. :p
