Hi there.
As of late, I have been researching some stuff about this alternative Gym Leader Challenge Format in the Pokemon Trading Card Game.
One of the Toronto card stores is planning to do a Gym Leader Challenge (GLC) event once per month. This store recently held a free event where the winner can win a playmat and other swag. As I am a play for swag local type player, this kind of interests me. Card stores doing GLC format are rare I think.
There is a fair bit of information out there and a larger card pool so it is kind of overwhelming. After a few days of research, I have decided on a type, bought some older cards and have an idea what cards to use from my current and old cards.
The Standard format in the Pokemon TCG uses the latest cards available in the card pool. There is no ban list in the Pokemon TCG. Yu-Gi-OH TCG has a ban list that changes while Pokemon has a rotation every year where some cards get moved out of the standard format. A rotation in Pokemon keeps the game fresh and changes the metagame.
With the Gym Leader Format, cards printed from the Black & White sets onwards are legal. You also have:
Only one of each card with the same name per deck (except Basic Energy)
No Rule Box cards or ACE SPEC cards
Only one type (color) of Pokémon per deck
Cards printed from Black & White–on
No cards on the Ban List
What makes this format interesting is that you choose one type for your Pokemon just like Gym Leaders do. No rule box Pokemon like Pokemon ex, Pokemon V, Pokemon GX are allowed.
The one thing that is weird is having one of each card in the deck. So no duplicate cards. However, there are cards with different names that have similar card effects. Cards can be categorized by type and card effects.
I wanted to choose a type and deck where I have most of the cards already and don't want to buy too much cards for this format. Fighting made sense to me as I like the firepower they provide. I do have to deal with resistance against some Pokemon but it is okay. Dragon and grass were other options I were thinking of.
Grass
I was considering Grass because of this Vivillon evolution line, Meganium + Chestnaught combination. As this Gym Leader Challenge Format has decks with one copy each, consistency and setup seems tricky I think.
Dragon
Dragon seemed like a good option as they have no weakness and there is no Lillie's Clefairy ex in the format. You have good support Pokemon such as Regidrago, Tatsugiri and Drakloak. For attackers, I am not sure. I think Dragonite is good. Haxorus is also good.
According to the Gym Leader Challenge Guide as of March 2026, these are the staple cards.
I took the time and work to put the categories in an image with the Limitless TCG Image Generator tool.

There are other good cards or cards that are better suited depending on the type of deck you play.
Instead of waiting through drawing, Pokemon search cards help with getting what you need on your turn. Searching is for either for setup or to build an attack.
Even though the cards are different, the card effects may be the same or similar. One example is Bridgette and Gloria.
Some Stadium cards are good for finding Pokemon from the deck.
In general, drawing more cards is good. It helps with board setup, getting attackers ready and advancing your position. Here are some good ones.
Some cards lets you draw cards if the opponent does something to you. These card effects are more passive.
Hand disruption cards limits the opponent's hand size and ruins future plans. Disrupting the opponent's hand can prevent a loss in the next turn. Some cards are better than others while some are for certain situations.
Reset Stamp looks pretty powerful as it is an item card and affects the opponent only. It is hard to find.
There are cases where you don't want to attack the opponent's Active Pokemon. You want to target a Benched Pokemon for a knockout or to trap a non attacking Pokemon to buy more time.
In a format that has one copy per card, recovery can prove useful for reuse. Some recovery cards go from discard pile into hand or from discard pile to deck. The type of recovery matters too. The card can recover a Pokemon, Energy card or a Supporter card.
Sometimes you want or need a card from your Prize cards and not from your deck.
Note that Town Map is a not a Prize card retrieval card but you gain information of your Prize cards.
Being able to shut off abilities can be pretty powerful. Some cards are more impactful than others.
This Gym Leader Challenge (GLC) format is interesting. I don't think it is easy or beginner friendly due to the large card pool. I started playing standard format at around Paradox Rift when E, F and G regulation mark cards were legal. I can still use some old cards from D, E, F, G so I do have to buy too many old cards.
The TAG TEAM supporter cards are pricey at around 4 to 11 CAD each. I avoid those even though the deck may not be optimized or super competitive.
Some of the older powerful cards can be either expensive or hard to find. A GLC deck may not be powerful if you are unable to get certain cards.
Thank you for reading.
