Hi there. In this education post, I talk about how there are professors (university/college) and teachers who are designing their school courses that limit or eliminate cheating with Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.

Academic Integrity At Risk

I do think a lot of students are taking the easy way out by using AI tools to solve graded assignments and papers. Some of these students are more concerned about getting good grades, getting the degree paper over actually learning. This is how you get some university/college graduates who fall between the cracks and seem to not possess great work ethic nor intellect. It is not a good look for the graduate nor the institution if students have good scores and credentials on paper but lack substance. This affects the hiring practices, the workplace and society as a whole.

The motivation behind this post is based on this news below.

This one professor at Brown University suspects students of using AI tools like ChatGPT on take home exams. He regrets this decision at the end of the semester as the average midterm exam score was a really high 96. The historical average grade was between 65 to 80 percent.

No More Take Home Exams, Assignments

I am used to STEM courses, mostly mathematics and statistics. Some of these courses do have assignments where there are questions to answer, maybe some coding pieces and such. The work you submit should be your own.

To limit or eliminate the possibility of AI tools as aids, courses will eliminate take home exams and assignments. Most of the grades would involve monitored tests and exams.

Presentations for marks could still be okay. Even if the student uses AI tools to generate content for their presentations, the teacher/professor could test students with hard questions. The questions would be designed to test the students understanding of what they are presenting. You can generate content, but being to recall information and answer questions is a different skillset.

Not Sure How Essay Based Courses Are Run Now

I am not familiar with courses in the arts and humanities. Students have access to AI tools but teachers and professors have access to them too. AI could be used to detect if multiple papers are similar or not. Similar papers could be detect and the students could be brought in and be suspected of copying. AI detection tools can be used if written papers were generating by AI or not. There may be a tolerance level where maybe 10% could be an okay rate of AI being used or something. The accuracy of AI detection tools may not be 100%. (It may detect cheating but the student may not actually have used AI.)

Students who are caught using too much AI in their papers would be punished. The work was not done by the student but by the AI tool.

Writing based courses may have less assignments but more tests. You would write essays in an exam room with no technology. Multiple choice questions would be common I would think. They efficiently test students and are great for large classrooms.
