I’ve tried double down on reading to my kids. It’s the best time and usually leads to great discussions. We each take a turn picking the book that we will read next. I usually pick the classics. My oldest usually picks some fantasy series that we have around the house. My younger son usually picks something he found at the library.
Enter the wingfeather saga. Never heard of it but here we go. We started reading it last week.
I loved this passage from one of the characters.
Wingfeather saga book 1.
On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness
"Lad, it's one thing to be poor in pocket—nothing wrong with that. But poor in heart— that's no good. Look at them. They're sad in the eyes, and it's a sadness no amount of money could repair. Why, they hardly remember what it's like to laugh from the belly anymore."
I feel like a fail as a parent often but one thing I constantly try to teach is being content with what we have. We might be poor in pocket but we love and laugh and have fun as a family. It’s not always sunshine but it’s always good to have what we have.
We stopped the book at this point and had a chat about it.
