Well Hivers it looks like my thing for old bridges is continuing. This one is over the East Dart at Postbridge on Dartmoor.
Clapper bridges are mostly found on Dartmoor and this is one of the few still standing. Mostly built in the medieval period for pack animals they are simple constructions with granite slabs supported on stone pillars. The granite slabs on this bridge are around 4m in length and weigh about 8 tonnes each.
The river here is not deep maybe a half a meter in the summer but it can be a real torrent in the winter.
It is close to the Dartmoor Park Centre at Postbridge and a favourite spot for walkers and picnic’s.
The road bridge close by holds some memory’s, while I was at college in the 70s a friend drove over it far too fast in his aged VW beetle and wrecked the suspension when it landed.
