Giorno trentuno.
DG.

Day thirty one.
Dear mom and dad, I am sorry to have frightened you with my letter from last week. I finally received your answers, all in all making you agitate also had a positive side, however I am safe and sound, nothing happened to me if I was not able to win the respect of the other prisoners; you know, in prison it's a priceless sentiment, and now I'm treated with a special eye by the prison society.
However, it is not a valid justification for the concern that I have aroused in you, but I also wanted to have an emotional response from you, and those letters that have given me show that the attempt has not been in vain, that you still and forever feed the same love that I harbor for you, who have resisted even too long in keeping silent, and this is demonstrated by the number of pages that you have consumed front and back to let me know everything about your feelings, the indelible memories that bind us, your daily life knowing me in here. You must not let my imprisonment petrify you, do not close yourself in a bubble to avoid suffering or, worse, feeling guilty knowing that I am here; the shame of my situation falls solely on me, it is my neck, not yours, on which the guillotine of guilt hangs, so do not worry about the epilogue of my story, because as soon as I get out of this cage a new chapter of the my life.
You know, he says that error is the master of life, and I have never had a harder lesson than this; the memory of this story will remain forever carved in a hidden region of my mind, a warning that emerges to make me make the right choice as possible. Had I had the same teaching long ago, I would have avoided many of the wrong choices that led me to this fate, which deprived me of my freedom.
Life in prison, as I pointed out earlier, has improved compared to the first days when loneliness and fear were the masters. I have found many companions, I avoid saying friends because in a place like this it is unlikely to be able to make real friends, survival does not allow you to get involved with other people, because too many feelings lead to being weak, and in here, as you can imagine, the weak succumbs. It will not happen to me, have no doubt, the companions with whom I have surrounded myself are milestones of this prison, they know the system and its rules, they have many connections within the prison, knowledge that I could use to improve my conduct between these bars, to demonstrate to the guards my diligence and expertise in carrying out the tasks assigned to me; my goal inside the prison is to be able to access the small botanical garden in the courtyard that is entrusted to the care of the most deserving prisoners, with whom there is no risk of escape or episodes of violence, and therefore fewer forces to deploy.
I will likely get a position in the prison laundry room; one of the men I met last week has contacts with the detainee who heads the administration of the laundry room, who is said to be a ruthless man with strong principles, that is, he does not tolerate treason. I will be careful, I will spend as little time as possible in his presence, I want to avoid entering his circle of trust in order to have to suffer the consequences of a gesture that he can interpret as treason.
My attempt to reassure you was a little rough and incomplete, but I don't want to lie to you to make you feel better. I will spend the time I have left to serve as far away from any danger as possible, because I am convinced that I would not be able to get away unharmed. Know that the only thing I am sure of is that you will get me back in your arms, that you will see my white face again and that together, holding a warm embrace, we will burst into tears of joy.
Thank you for being there again, with love,
DG.
