This was a lot of fun to write, and I really enjoyed all the endings that people wrote. It's always interesting to see where people take them. Anyways, here's my own ending to this story. I'm always trying to create the feel of action pacing, which I find difficult to do while keeping a sense of narrative going.
Foreigner
“You can’t to do that,” she said in her broken English.
Her face was contorted in a rage, highlighting the wrinkles that came with late age. Lee Minkyung slammed the door behind her as she entered. “Other students. Yes. Say this is not equal. You can’t do that.”
Lee Minkyung pointed her finger towards the student in question, Park Dasol. The child’s lips still quivered in fear and anxiety, after having flunked her summoning test with a total and complete bomb.
“She failed. Yes.” Minkyung said. “Why you give her…another chance?”
Sarah Lopez folded her arms. Her excitement after first having met Minkyung deteriorated five minutes after their first class together, half a year back. Where Sarah’s style was calm, orderly and authoritative, Minkyung’s was hectic, erratic and authoritarian. The perfunctory policy of the Korean Magical Education Bureau regarding Korean instructors always shadowing foreign instructors in the classroom weighed on Sarah. It was Minkyung, and Minkyung only, that she butted heads with. Every day since then had been like brushing teeth with a razor blade.
This conflict, Sarah knew, was inevitable.
All other classes were perfect. Latin Summons accompanied with Bek Jinsoo, went smooth and the children brought out a myriad of lesser demons without error. History of Incantations with Lee Jaeyun was exciting, with students ready to participate, eager to learn the variations on Germanic blood rites and how these symbols shifted over time.
Sarah didn’t want to hate Minkyung. But damn if that bitch didn’t make it hard as hell not to.
So when Minkyung taunted Dasol in front of the class for failing to summon a basic familiar, that was the last straw.
Minkyung paced up to her and pulled Dasol’s breathing mask down, asking her why she was afraid to speak in front of the class. Dasol, large for her age, and in fact the largest girl in the school, stared down at her feet. Minkyung pulled the mask and let it snap back on Dasol’s face and at that, Sarah intervened.
She’d never interevened before. A foreigner wasn’t supposed to intervene in a Korean’s affairs. Especially an older woman’s affairs.
But Sarah did. And when the class ended, she brought Dasol along for an opportunity to summon the familiar with just the two of them in a side room meant for student studying.
Minkyung rambled on about how unfair it was. And Sarah finally broke.
“Shut up,” she said. “Stop talking and leave. Let me talk to Dasol. Let me help her, and that will be that.”
“Excuse me?” Minkyung bawked. Her neck shrunk back like a turkey and her splotchy makeup grew disheveled as the woman’s taught skin stretched over her face.
“Leave!” Sarah demanded.
Minkyung protested. Then they heard it.
“Hajima!!!” Dasol shouted in Korean. Sarah knew enough by this point to understand.
The student was shouting ‘stop’.
But she wasn’t talking to her teachers.
My Ending
Sarah and Minkyung turned and saw it. Dasol spoke to a familiar, waiting on the ceiling above them. The spirit had taken a grotesque form, all arms and a face attached to it's torso staring down at them.
“Stop, please, don’t!” Dasol pleaded. But it was too late, the creature lept to Minkyung. The old woman whispered the start of a recitation before it fell on her, smashing her face and body with its innumerable arms. Sarah fell on her ass then struggled to her feet and broke in a run. “Noo!” Dasol shouted.
The familiar echoed Dasol’s pleading with a monstrous grunt, mimicking the girl’s cry in it’s inhuman voice. Sarah struggled to think.
The familiar is controlled by its host spirit. It’s both a summon and an expression of the host.
The creature raged after her, shattering windows and glass on its way. Sarah leapt through the door to the teacher’s office, the occupants of which now stood on their feet, mouths open in horror.
“Run!” she said. The familiar burst through the door behind her. Bek Jinsoo, the teacher who’d advised her Latin Summons course, raised in hands and summoned a barrier in time as the creature attempted to burst through. The glowing forcefield held the creature in place, its arms flailing through in an attempt to rip at human flesh.
“What is this?” Bek shouted. Lee Jaeyun ran forward and launched her own forcefield just as the creature began to breakdown Bek’s.
“It killed Minkyung!” Sarah shouted. “Dasol summoned it.”
“Dasol?” they both asked.
“I’ve no idea how she summoned something so powerful.” Sarah realized she was hugging herself, terrified at the creature that continued to get closer and closer through the barrier. It’s inhuman, monstrous growls echoed in the small teacher’s office.
“Where is she now?” Bek grunted, sweat dripping from his face as he struggled to maintain the barrier.
“Find her!” Jaeyun sunk to one knee as her barrier drained her energy. “Get her!”
Sarah stared at the arms snapping through the barriers.
“Sarah!” Jaeyun shouted. “Sarah! The side door. The side door! Go!”
Sarah snapped out of her fear and bolted through the side door of the office, the roar of the familiar echoing behind her. She heard Jaeyun screaming in pain as she raced back to the room Dasol was left in.
The girl was sitting on the ground, crying.
“Dasol,” Sarah said. “Dasol, look at me. LOOK AT ME. You control that thing, understand. You control it. You need to stop it.”
The cries of the teachers filled her ears. Sarah peaked her head out the office. The creature had broken through the teacher’s office.
Dasol began to sob.
“Hey!” Sarah shook her. “Hey listen. You can stop this. You can do it. Believe in yourself, Dasol. You need to believe in yourself, understand? You’re a strong and beautiful young girl and you have the power to stop this, because YOU summoned it. It’s a part of you, okay?”
Sarah heard the sound of a hundred hands running down the hall. She turned in time to see it approach her.
The teacher grabbed her student, continuing to plead with her. Dasol looked back at her with crying eyes.
“Teacher. En-ga-lish-uh no.”
Sarah felt the hands descend on her. “Fuck,” she said.
