It’s been my observation that the virtue of temperance is on the rise. Temperance is often mischaracterized as just teetotalism. This is due to its historical use surrounding “the Temperance movement” in the US against alcohol consumption. The true and classical definition of temperance is “moderation of the physical appetites”. It’s the virtue that produces discipline in eating, sleeping, drinking, sex, and whatever our bodies crave.

As I watch younger and younger people choose movements like NoFap, Intermittent fasting, veganism, sleep regulation, and all the various 30 day challenges that require discipline and abstinence, I can’t help but feel as though temperance is a growing strength and virtue among the young.

I have a lot more to say on this topic but I’ll leave it at that.
