The Coastal Path in Kristiansand is a path divided into 9 stages. It follows the coast from east to west, or west to east. You can start wherever you want. The entire route is 126 kilometers. Since our city is a coastal city, 2 stages went in the city, but along the harbor. This stage, as you can see on the map below, goes out of the city. But since the city is large in area, I walk along residential areas and industrial areas. The walk also goes through scenic areas.

The third ( green) stage

The third stage of the trail, runs from Belevue to Kjosbukta. On the map it is the green, 10.2 km. trail.

I started where I left off - at the bridge that leads traffic out of the city center. But there is a lot of construction / road work going on, which made it a bit challenging to get going. I take a look bacd at the city and the ferry terminal. All the cars are waiting for the ferry to arrive. I have to walk a good distance through the industrial area.

Glencore Nikkelverk

Then I pass two big factories. The first is Glencore nickel factory. They produce nickel, cobalt and copper that are exported. It was a small group of engineers and businessmen who established the nickel plant in 1910. But long before that, Norway has produced nickel elsewhere in the country. In 1870, the country had a total of 40 mines. Glencore was once called Falconbridge. It was at that time when the Canadian company Falconbridge Nikcel Mines Ltd had found large deposits in Sudbury, Canada, but needed a place with refining capacity (Kristiansand) Since then it has had other owners and thus other names like Xstrada. Due to a merger in 2013, it is now called Glencore nickel plant.

Hennig Olsen Is / Ice cream factory

The next factory is Hennig Olsen Is, our own locally produced ice cream and the very best you can get. (That's what most people think, including myself). The factory has been in operation since 1924 and still a family business. Three generations are responsible for the production. They have developed their ice cream into a variety of styles. In recent years they have more focus on sustainability.

They have opened their own factory outlet, where they sell surplus goods. You have to physically show up either on Tuesday afternoons or Saturdays. You can also sit outside by the sea enjoying an ice cream.

Now I get to the first stretch where I follow a short nature path to Myren Gård. Last summer I visited Myren Gård on a guided tour of both the house and the garden.

Because I am passing by, I did make a short stop here to take a look at this beautiful mansion from 1764. It is built in the Swiss style and was meant to be a summer residence from around 1855. At the time it was build the location was outside Kristiansand. This is not the case any more. It is not only the house that is worth looking at. The garden is a beautiful English style landscaped garden, containing 170 different trees, plants and bushes.

Now I'm in the Vågsbygd district. I walk through the industrial areas of Fiskå and Lumber. I didn't take photos, as these ares have mostly garages and shops selling cars. But eventually I get to Storenes and walk directly along the sea and through residential areas until I reach the marina in Vågsbygd.

The marina has evolved from a small wooden jetty to concret piers, with room for many boats. I think many of the locals in Vågsbygd keep their boat here.

Kjosbukta

This bay is called Kjosbukta. I have quite a good stretch of greenery around me. But we're not out of town yet. This stage ends at the end of the bay, but the day I continue the Coastatl Path I will walk through Voie district.

Kjos Hovedgård

Kjos Hovedgård is another manor house like Myren Gård. The white building was built sometime between 1785 and 1788 and is a great example of the architectural style that southern Norway is known for. It is inhabited and privately owned and can therefore only be admired from a distance.
