I had a text from an unrecognised mobile number yesterday, and my Spidey senses immediately went on the alert. Now, dear reader, you need to be careful in these circumstances; definitely do not give anything away; make them work for it even if they are genuine.
Scammer: "Hi, Dad, can you text me back."
Me: "Who are you?"
Scammer: "It's your daughter."
Me: "Which one?"
Scammer: "Your eldest. I dropped my phone down the toilet, and now it doesn't work, and I'm scared I've lost everything and can't access anything."
It was at this point he knew this was not from either of his daughters.
I have Twins that were born by caesarian; there is no "Eldest" plus why are they not saying their name? I did contact the girls directly, and both were fine and had not contacted me, but it just shows how easily some of the scams succeed when people are far too trusting. Obviously, if you asked outright: "Hey, are you a criminal?" they're hardly likely to reply "Oh, floppy disks! Ya got me." so you need to figure out some questions to ask that only the person they are pretending to be would know but in such a way that hopefully doesn't arouse their suspicions: "How's the dog?" Umm? They don't have a dog, actually. 😝
My actual name is Pete. Here is why I have the username dickturpin.
