Autism is a more common disease than many people realize. Just 30 years ago, there were 1 or 2 cases of autism for every 10,000 people; now children with autism are born in 1 in 90 to 100 people. Scientists around the world are sounding the alarm: there are more children with diabetes, cancer and Down syndrome combined.

As someone who is both autism_18px.png autistic and diabetic, I (frittro@frittro) really appreciated this post. Might I encourage you to have a look at the Autism rights movement (or Movimento de direitos dos autistas in Português) for why I use the autism_18px.png autism infinity symbol rather than the traditional 🧩 puzzle piece symbol for autism. This new symbol represents the social model of disability more than the medical model. It shows autism to be more of a "disability" caused by something within society in general (being ill equipped for such diversity); rather than a "disease" caused by something within the person so "afflicted".

We are a new HIVE Community created recently, and officially launched on 1-Apr-2022, here on the social blockchain and on Discord. Our goal is to become a place to discuss your own or a loved one's experience of diabetes, for shared mutual peer support and encouragement.
