The controversy is that the date of “Australia Day” January 26 marks the anniversary of the arrival of the “first fleet” to Australia. The first fleet being the first boat loads of white explorers/settlers. There is a growing segment of folks in Australia who find this date to be disrespectful to the land’s first aboriginal inhabitants. They would like the date changed and the focus taken away from commemorating the arrival of the first fleet.

There is of course another large segment of the population who wants things to stay as they are. They say well of course we should celebrate the arrival of the first fleet. And Australia Day has always been Jan 26 so why change it?
