February 9th: «The sibling bond». Trouble for sleeping? Let's check out some short films to blow our restless minds. Think you can handle it? Welcome then!
I was five years old when momma came home and gave me "the little brother talk". I was disturbed: how come, being myself a family member, I was not consulted about such big decision? Mom just spilled the news to me and I had no word on the matter (to be honest, I was perfectly fine with being an only child. And no, being five years old does not keep you out of adult things... parents should know that. At least mine should). It took time for me to stop feeling uneasy around my brother, even though I have to admit that ever since he was born, life has had its benefits: thanks to baby bro dad got us our first game console and for some years I was able to sleep at night (I have fear of the dark and can't stand sleep alone so, having my brother beside me helped a lot), among other things.
Today, though, my dearest brother and I will be making our first year without speaking to each other. We just don't seem to get along... so our sibling bond might be a little broken. My brother is an ache in my chest, and at the same time, he is someone I know I could get a bullet for (how crazy is that?). So, that is why I have always been fancy of siblings who are really close to each other and, basically, that can stay in the same room at peace. I look for understanding a connection that feels missing. And that is how I end up "after" twins and into what might be the opposite side of the sibling bond I'm accustomed to, the consuming love.
Twins and the three short films that you will find below may serve as an argument to this point of view, but I have to "warn" you: they're pretty... messed up? See for yourself and let me know what you think :)
1992, Children must not be alone, especially if Enriqueta and Ramoneta are around the corner. The twin sisters have a love-hate relationship that is surrounded by murder, ointments, poultice, flesh, blood and confident customers... all on Sunset Street No. 17A.
This short film won the Animasyros festival (Greece, 2010) and the Gaudí Awards (2011).
They were born as one. A unique human being. Hole in every possible way. But with conscience appeared the horror: they were different, they had to be separated. One accepted his new individual form, the other one needed to be whole with his brother again... no matter the cost.
Little sisters drain your energy, Edna Pearce is very aware of that. Also, little sisters are often spoiled. The two sisters of this short film (Lol and Edna) are alone on an island, so alone, so consumed by their routines. They just have each other but sometimes that is not enough, nor are the many cups of the imaginary tea party one of them insist to throw whenever the swell brings a "new friend" to the shore.
The last two videos are longer than the first one. You can always come back to watch them. Take your time n.n
There is always a chance that you may have watched them before, have you? What did you think about the sibling bond after doing so?
Every Friday will be "Insomnia" time in this blog. Videos, cómics, survival horror video games and other stuff will be posted here to share and discuss (if you feel like it).
Let me know your thoughts about this first experience!
PS: Do you have any siblings you don't get along with?
