On the southern coast of Crimea on the 40-meter rock of Ai-Todor Cape is the famous Swallow's Nest - one of the mascots and emblems of the entire peninsula.
The architectural territorial monument refers to the village. City Council Gaspra Yalta.
Reminiscent of the medieval palace, this building was built in 1912. Earlier in the place there was a wooden structure, which first appeared in 1877 - 1878. Then, at the site of the Swallow's Nest, a wooden house was built-a dacha for the wounded in the Russian-Turkish general war. They call this place "love castle" and it is depicted on their canvas by many famous artists, including I. Aivazovsky.
After the general of the house passed repeatedly from hand to the hands of different owners, while the Rakhmanin merchant did not destroy it and built in its place a wooden castle "Swallow's Nest".
The building has a modern look, as I said, in 1912, when Baron Steingel, who sold Azerbaijan oil, chose Crimea as a holiday destination. On the rock, the Baron decides to erect a medieval Gothic castle, in the likeness of the people who surround it on the banks of the Rhine. The 12-meter building, on a 10 to 20-meter foundation, was designed by Leonid Sherwood.
After the baron, the fort was owned by another Shelaputin merchant, who opened a restaurant in the building, which closed after the death of the owner.
In 1927, the Swallow's Nest nearly collapsed after a powerful earthquake with a strength of 9 points. Part of the rock foundations collapsed into the sea, and large cracks threatened to undermine the entire structure. The condition of the palace was recognized as an emergency and only in 1968 a large scale recovery and restoration work was undertaken. The building was "planted" on cantilevered concrete plates and surrounded by anti-seismic belts.
Since then, the renovated "Swallows Nest" has been recognized by many in the world and is recognized as a 20th century architectural monument.
