What I think we can say for sure about Jesus related to the matter is this: he never forced anyone into a situation that they didn't willingly put themselves in. And given that anything government does is via force, it's difficult to understand a Christian advocating for government forcing this upon its citizens. At the same time, I also don't think its reasonable for government to force Christians away from practicing compassion as they see fit. Truthfully, for me this issue boils down to yet another reason I can't see a Christian moral argument in favor of government's existence and can only see arguments against it.
