Those big tall fan palms, the Baja or Mexican fan palms, are native to Mexico, but not California. But there are actually native California palm trees in places out by Palm Springs and Joshua Tree. They are the Washingtonia variety and they don't grow nearly as tall, but they have much fatter trunks.
