What a winter! I really transformed my garden into a food forest. I have my herbs and veggies all mixed through companion planting. I have apple, pear and cherry trees started. I planted a few peach pits, no scarifying.
I have tons of kale growing, It is not only a great seller, it is a family favorite. We eat and drink kale. It is one of the POWER FOODS I love.
My turnips are up! Another SUPER FOOD.
Beets are another SUPER FOOD. They are also a dye, a sweetener, and juice. Not to mention a great seller. I will be continually planting to reap all year.
Peas my favorite legume. I put peas in everything. Plus usually we usually eat most of them in the garden working. I am trying them in a straw bale this year to see how they do.
Straw bale issues. I will continue to use the straw bale technique, but, the biggest problem I have is that 50% of them grow wheat. The seed removal process is not all that great, in certain farms.
So, my next venture will be to set my bales out far ahead of time and allow them to sprout. If they sprout like the pic above, I will plant root veggies. This will allow the wheat to grow and shade the root veggies and the root systems will be compatible. The shade will help keep the plant from bolting to soon.
If there is no, or little, growth, I will be able to plant everything else. This means, more than likely this summer and fall I will have one heck of a root crop for harvesting
Radish is just only starting to grow. I had a few pop up early, but for the most part they are starting.
My greens are up and growing. I will be thinning either this week, after the rain, or next.
Yarrow is killing it. Growing like crazy after the replanting.
Thyme is doing well, I planted more thyme up near the strawberries. I will be trying kale around it this year. It did well last year.
Yarrow after replanting this winter
I will keep the update going, but this is the base, there are tons of herbs coming up including the cilantro, rosemary, Valerian, and even a basil up.
