One of the games I was super excited about when I got my PS5 was Ghost of Tsushima. I have heard nothing but good things about this game and that it is one of the best games to be released lately. It came out in 2020 on the PS4, but they recently released the directors cut that includes an extra island to explore and PS5 optimization.
The game begins with a large Mongol invasion to the Tsushima Island. You play as Jin Sakai, who is a samurai warrior sworn to protect the island and its people.
The Mongols end up winning the invasion and take Jin's uncle Lord Shimura captive. Jin is wounded pretty bad in the battle and ends up being taken in and healed up by some lady thief.
So now Jin is on a mission to rescue his uncle and push back against the Mongol invaders.
The game seems to focus a lot on stealth, which is something I am not a huge fan of. I prefer the games where you can just go in and start blasting people to take them out. I don't really like the games where you have to sneak past enemies and try not to be seen. The only stealth game I enjoyed was Plague's Tale.
This game does have some pretty amazing graphics and every scene looks like a perfectly framed cinematic experience.
There are a lot of flashbacks used to give you a back story on why your character acts like such a baby about certain things. One of the annoying things is that he is upset that the lady that helped him was a thief and he basically tells her that she has no honor with her life, even though she is the only reason he is alive.
He through a big fit about sneaking up on his enemies and killing them from behind. He would rather face them with honor and fight.
One cool thing about this game is the extremely minimal HUD. It is basically non existent, which allows you to just enjoy the beauty that the developers have created.
One thing that is going to take some getting used to is the quest system and navigation. It seems like the wind blows towards your quest objective. It is a big difference between the traditional RPG games with a compass type system that shows you where to go next.
I am about 4 hours or so into the game and haven't done too much yet. I have liberated a couple small towns and done a few main quests. This game is one that seems to explain things by just letting you experience them and not really giving you tutorials and holding your hand, which can be a good way of letting the player experience things and learn on their own, but at times it seems that there is no real direction to where you are supposed to go.
But I have grown to enjoy these types of games where you are free to make your own adventure and there is no real linear way to play the game. I am hoping that the action picks up a bit more in this game though as I continue to play and I am hoping that all the hype around this game didn't make me expect more out of it.
It is an amazing game with beautiful scenery and I am looking forward to getting more into its story. I have been very impressed with Sony and their exclusives so far. I think Sony is becoming one of my favorite game developers. They don't seem to push out half assed games like so many other developers.
One cool thing about this game is the multiplayer content that is included in the PS5 version. I am looking forward to playing it with a few people here from Hive, but I want to get through the main story first. I think this game could be pretty awesome as I continue the adventure.
