This past Sunday here in the US was Father's Day and my kids gave me the best Father's Day ever. A lot of people get gifts and stuff for these types of occasions, but I got something way better than that, quality time with my kids and it was their idea.
My wife has been in Washington and Oregon for the past few days and left before Father's Day, so I wasn't expecting much that day since we usually have to remind our kids about these types of things. I had to work early in the morning, but about 3 hours before I was going to be getting off work, my kids texted me and asked if I could take them all fishing.
Of course I was going to agree with them. I told them I was going to buy some steaks and some other stuff for dinner and we were going to have a nice meal together after as well.
My son has been an avid fisherman these past few months and has gotten really good at it, when he isn't splitting his head open on his fishing trips. He was excited to take out his bow and do some bow fishing for some carp. It has been really cool to see him get out of the house and be excited about fishing and seeing all of the different fish that he has been catching.
My daughter isn't as used to fishing as my son and still gets a bit squeamish when putting worms on the hooks. It also may have been due to the fact that the container of worms was left in my son's car all day and got extremely hot, killing the worms, so they were nothing more than warm dead limp noodles.
We didn't catch anything before dinner, but my son went back out to a different spot after we ate and shot this big guy. It was his first catch with the bow. He is out right now fishing as well, and I am sure that he will be catching a lot more.
Overall, Father's Day this year was one of the best in recent years. It is hard seeing your kids grow up and want to spend time away with their friends, so it was awesome that they both wanted to hang out with their old man and do some fishing, even if I do suck at it.
