I don't think i have said what it is i do for a living. I manage a liquor store apart from being a student. I decided to study at an online university, N.O.U.N, so i could work to support my mom in paying bills. Below is a picture of a portion of what we sell.
Wine– red, white, whiskey, vodka, scotch, etc– is a very popular beverage– just like beer. It is consumed not only by the elite but also the average man who knows of it's health benefits. A glass or two of good wine aids digestion and also renews dead cells in the body. This concoction made from fermented grapes or grain lives up to it's name.
However, like most produce, it is also subject to the rise and fall of the economy.
As someone who sells this product daily, i do see the effect that changes in quality and quantity has on the market.
Take Jameson(Black Barrel) for example. It can't even be found within our proximity!
The infamous Hennessy VSOP which was sold at 25,000 at retail stores is now 45,000. This does not settle well either for the consumer or we the retailers.
The constant rise of Dollars has had major effect on the economy of Nigeria. The inflation of prices is no small matter, given that only a select few now overlook the prices of the wine.
In terms of quality, some have lost that and we the retailers– with the best outcome in mind for the business and customer satisfaction– decided to let go of a few which have proven to dissatisfy our customers.
It's not a joke. The only thing we can hope for now is better days ahead.
I believe that the constant banning of crypto might also be playing a part in the constant rise of prices on our favorite beverage. Even Beer did not escape this unfortunate event.
Also, the ban of importation and the strict policies placed on organisations in our country doesn't spare. It is a good thing that we have our own breweries. This way, some of our famous beverages did not get affected much.
We know people. When you forbid them from doing one thing, they find a way to do it even at the cost of an arm.
All i can say is... I'm not happy with this constant rise. Mom bought a tier of Garri (cassava flour) for 500 naira. Gone are the days it was 100 naira.
The only thing keeping me sane right now is the fact that i found Hive.
