What is Actually GAINED by Destroying Everything for Profit?
Not to get on the alarmist bandwagon here, but sometimes I really worry about the state of the world. I worry about people's priorities going off the rails.
I especially worry about the particular "faction" of individuals out there who will do virtually everything for profit; virtually anything to make another buck or two... and damn the consequences.
Now, I'm not anti-money, and frankly I like having some of this stuff. But, like everything there's also something to the whole idea of there ”being too much of a good thing.”
The point I'm trying to make here is that if you destroy everything — especially resources — as part of your quest to always make profit then what's going to happen to that profit when you run out of the resources you need to make the profit?
I speak to this from the perspective of somebody who has directly been in the middle of such a situation — albeit on a relatively small scale — in which one of the things from which I derived my livelihood was basically ”over-harvested” to the point that neither those who turned what was basically a cottage industry into industrial sized production or the original Cottagers had anything left at the end.
From my personal perspective, I was making about $40,000 a year just working part time on something and by the end of the ”invasion” of people who thought they could turn it into an industry (about 5 years later), everybody remaining would be lucky to make maybe $1,500 a year.
I look at it, and I can't see how that approach possibly benefits anyone.
But I guess I have always been somewhat naive about the sheer depth of human greed. Nobody is satisfied with just doing pretty well, everybody wants to be the next billionaire. It suggests that as a society we have reached a point where simply ”doing well” is no longer good enough.
Although I got a very ”nice” business degree from a major university, when I left school I was pretty convinced — that is to say I had received an ”education” — that the business world was pretty much the last place in the universe I wanted to put my energies.
As I alluded to in a previous post, one of the things business schools teach is that you have to be a complete ruthless asshole who cares nothing of the people around you, and nothing of the resources you burn... as long as you focus on the one mission that is central to corporate America: maximize profits at any cost!
Again, let me reiterate I'm not opposed to money and I'm not opposed to doing well, but this land raping, people raping, profit maximalist attitude is just incredibly destructive and worse still, it contributes to people forgetting their humanity.
And that's just a great shame.
