I envy people who are able to perform and get everything done regardless of what is going on around them, in regardless of what's going on in their lives.
At the risk of sounding like a prima donna, I am really only able to do many things in my daily world when it is under the right conditions.
I am well aware that the "right conditions" is a highly nebulous and typically very personal concept, but I find that it holds remarkably true not just for myself but also for other people.
In my earliest days as a writer one of the pieces of advice I was often given was that you have to sit down and write every day, no matter whether or not you feel creative, and no matter whether or not you even feel like writing. You just have to make yourself do it.
Well, I tried to adhere to that particular practice for a number of years, but I was largely unsuccessful at it. That is to say, anything I tried to write during times when it didn't seem like it was the right conditions turned out to be pure crap and I invariably ended up filing it under garbage.
As the years have rolled on by, I have come to recognize that one of the reasons I tend to be involved in many different things — rather than focused on a single thing — is precisely that I realize that I have to do work all the time, but I need to be able to switch between completely unrelated tasks in order to be effective at any one thing.
In retrospect, I've also come to recognize that one of the reasons I never held specific jobs back in my younger life — at least not for any significant period of time — was that I quickly grew unfocused and ineffective and then would end up either leaving or being asked to leave because my performance level deteriorated below the acceptable.
Along the way, I also tried to create the ostensibly "right conditions," but that didn't really work too well because I ended up putting far more energy into creating a framework and than to doing the actual work.
The "right conditions" are not necessarily rare, I just have to remember to forge while the iron is hot.
