True enough, some things are better left unsaid sometimes. You have to pick your battles carefully, and some people just like to argue for argument's sake.

But I think you are definitely right that it challenges us to look at opinions that are radically different from our own and seriously consider them rather than simply dismissing them out of hand. And it's usually the fact that something is very different from our own perspective that makes it feel controversial to us.
