I always find first hand accounts from people who actually lived in a place to be far more authentic than history books can ever talk about... I suppose because the books are often based on research people simply looking at dates and events that can be gotten from newspapers, but it excludes the many personal touches from individual people... which do not tend to make the "news," but are still very interesting.
