Sad, but true.
Sometime last year I watched an interesting YouTube clip with a political blogger talking to a psychologist, exploring the (disturbing) reality that current politics is more like so-called pro wrestling than about government.
People will steadfastly back their ideal/champion, even if they are supporting something to their own detriment. They are not actually voters, they are fans.
Which — taken to its extreme — leads to what you're suggesting, and even worse. Meanwhile, it's near to impossible for someone who actually wants to create positive civic change to gain much traction.
